YOUTH INJURIES

Youth injuries. The incidence rate of youth injury of all youth, children, teenager and adolescent, that are sports related is 40%. Because of more girls participating in sports, the ratio of girl to boy injury is about equal.
There are two types of trauma related to participation in sports:

Single event such as a fracture is referred to as Macro.

Repetitive trauma due to overuse is referred to as Micro.

When young athletes are injured they are encouraged to “be tough and play through the pain “This is not in the athletes’ best interest because:

  • This delays healing and returning back to sports.
  • This can turn and injury that is easily treated to one that is difficult to treat.
  • In some cases, this can prevent the athlete from future participation in sports due to permanent injury
Your Childs pediatrician will make an accurate diagnosis of the condition. The pediatrician will make the diagnosis by discussing the history of injury of your child, and a thorough examination. The age, sex, and participation in sports and how the injury occurred are important. Any symptoms are also important, if there was swelling or previous injury.
Stress fractures and tendonitis are avoidable. Any overuse injury generally is rest until a medical diagnosis can be given. Avoid those activities that aggravate the condition or cause pain.

The amount of training your child has before and after a sport is important to observe as to not over train and cause injury. Children who are “natural “athletes will be more inclined to over train or over use their bodies and cause injury. They are asked to play a sport from the beginning to the end. It is important that you as a parent monitor when it is too much.
