SOFTBALL

Softball Injuries happens but thats the name of the game, softball is identical to baseball in the injury department One of the most common sites for injury is the upper limb A recent study found that more than half of softball injuries were in the elbow or shoulder. This is due to the extreme speeds and enormous forces used in throwing in the sport.!

The risk of an elbow or shoulder injury was 2.6 times more for a pitcher than a position player due to repeatedly throwing the ball. The high breakdown rate of the muscles and ligaments can be seen when the throwing is analyzed biomechanically.

Joint balance is made up of two components:

  • The passive structures. These are the structures that hold your bones together such as joint capsules and ligaments, and
  • The active components – the muscles that move the joint.

When the passive structures become either too tight or too loose then the throwing movement will become unbalanced. When the throwing action forces the joint into certain positions, your joints will either constrict too tightly on the internal structures of the joint, or loosen too far during the vital acceleration phase, causing microscopic tears.

This will lead to grinding or tearing injuries that slowly accumulate and will become major injuries that can affect the ability to play at 100 percent

First, we assess the balance of your shoulder. This will include a visual assessment as well as palpating the passive structures and active components to discover if there are any anomalies present. If the need for treatment is discovered, we will then devise a treatment plan customized to your specific injury. For example, you may have some tightness in your joint capsule that requires soft tissue release, massage, cross fiber friction and stretching of surrounding muscles to loosen it and some exercises for your rotator cuff muscles to strengthen them and increase their stability.
