ROWING

Rowing is a fantastic way to get fit and at the same time enjoy nature’s beauty.

Rowing is a great way to develop core, arm and leg muscles as well as having cardiovascular benefits.  Since it is a repetitive sport, overuse injuries are the most common. The most common occur in the back and knee. Neck, wrist and ribs are another areas that come under a lot of stress. Rib fractures tend to occur with athletes who over train. Rowers should always look for ways to improve how they row to reduce the risk of injury. Poor technique is common and unless it is rectified serious injuries are almost inevitable. It was found that improperly supported forces of around 1000N can possibly be loaded through the lumbar spine if imbalances or errors in your technique are present. That is equivalent to over 220lbs through your spine in every stroke.

Rowing Injuries can come in the form of muscle strains or tendon friction injuries. The rowing stroke is a repeated continuous cycle. The rower has to sit in the position with the legs flexed, elbows straight, to a fully extended knee position and elbow flexion. Having a strong back and core strength is key to help increase the power through the stroke and avoid injury. Undergoing strength training will provide the rower with the muscular power to cope with the demands of the sports as well as undergoing a flexibility training program to help ensure the rower maintains optimum range of motion to perform the stroke.

British Sports Therapy can help you prevent muscle injuries as well as helping you recover more quickly from injuries.  This can include but not limited to Soft Tissue Release, Myofascial techniques, stretching, cross fiber friction, and Trigger Point Therapy. After a thorough assessment of the athletes’ body mechanics, a treatment planned will be created to help you achieve your optimum performance.
