Tennis is not only fun to play but a great workout. Since it is a sport that requires speed, power, endurance, balance and coordination, injuries can and do occur.  It can also cause injury to many parts of the body due to the repetition and use of the legs, spine and dominant arm. With injuries in these areas it can predispose you to different injuries in the shoulder, elbow, wrist, hip, knee ankle and spine.

The best known tennis injury is tennis elbow – but, despite its name is relatively uncommon in tennis players!

Tennis injuries in the general populations is roughly 5 injuries per 1,000 hours of participation. Injuries that require a trip to the hospital are at a rate of 33 injuries per 100,000 tennis players. With these statistics it is easy to say that the majority of tennis injuries do not require hospitalization.
Lower Limb – The most common types of tennis injuries occur in the lower limb (ankle, Knee and thigh). These types of injuries are typically caused by sprinting, stopping, pivoting, jarring and the pounding nature of tennis. These injuries are typically acute such as a sprain or tendonitis.

Upper Limb – Upper limb injuries are located in the elbow, shoulder, and wrist. These are usually caused by repetitive and high velocity movements required in swinging the racquet. They then tend to become overuse injuries. Tennis elbow is best known injury but it is actually relatively uncommon in tennis players.

Back Injuries – Pain and injuries in the back are common due to the rotation of the spine that is required to hit groundstrokes, also the combination of rotation, extension and lateral flexion that is involved in a serve.
