RUNNING

Running is a great sport that gets you fit and helps keep the weight down, it also clears the mind as it works your body. . It can bring you both pain and joy. We know that running gives you both pain and joy. With any sport there is the risk of injury. Running injuries not only slow you down physically but mentally as well.

The body was built to run. It has the mechanical aptitude to store and reuse energy, this helps the body not only run, but run more efficiently and at greater distances. The Achilles tendon can store 30% of the energy the calf muscle generates, and then like an elastic band “snap” back to help lift the heel off the ground as you run.

Are bodies are made to run but that does not necessarily mean we are great runners. There can be a number of reasons many runners develop injuries each year.  At any given time 25% of runners will have an injury. Majority if these injuries occur due to a change in the workload. Our bodies are very good at adapting to an increased workload but this takes time. This includes gradually increasing the distance that is run. The muscles, tendons, and bones cells can respond to this and increase their strength and endurance. If this is done too quickly these structures can begin to break down.

Changes in workload can include:

  • New footwear
  • Longer running times
  • Different terrain, eg more hills or rougher ground
  • Distance or time is increased

Running is sometimes hard on the muscles and joints. It is not uncommon for runners to have injuries that affect the hips, knees, ankles and feet of the runners. This is due to the impact and stress of running. Running injuries can become severe if ignored and become chronic/long term injuries.
