SKATEBOARDING

Skateboarding is a fun high energy sport that can provide a low impact cardio workout. Skateboarding injuries have steadily increased in correlation to the rise of popularity with the sport. Skateboarding as well as similar sports such as rip sticks and scooters all involve the risk of falls.  This can impact the lower and upper limbs, head and neck as well as spinal and hip injuries.  There is also the risk of soft tissue injuries such as bruises and sprains that respond well to British Sports Massage.

Fractures in the limbs, hips, etc increase with the height, speed and risky challenges that skateboarders enjoy to do tricks.

If at any time you suspect a fracture (broken bone) or a concussion, it is best to seek professional medical at the hospital or family Doctor so that you can get an XRAY

Skateboarding is not recommended for young children for many different reasons. When young children get injured in skateboarding accidents, they are often severely injured. There are different reasons young children should not participate in the sport. Young children are still growing and do not yet have the physical and thinking skills a person needs to control the skateboard and ride it safely. Slower reactions, a higher center of gravity, less development and poor balance lead to falls and can make children more likely to hurt their heads due to those falls.

Even though it is not recommended for children a staggering 60 % of injuries involve children under the age of 15. The most common are fractures of the wrist and ankle. Older Skateboarders typically have less severe injuries that are mostly sprains and soft tissue injuries. Inexperienced skateboarders suffer one-third of injuries, usually caused by falls.

British Sports Therapy can help you prevent muscle injuries as well as helping you recover more quickly from injuries.  This can include but not limited to Soft Tissue Release, Myofascial techniques, stretching, cross fiber friction, and Trigger Point Therapy.
