HORSE RIDING

Horseback riding can be a leisurely sport or fast paced intense. It is estimated that around 30 million Americans ride horses each year.  Horseback riding actually carries a higher injury rate than motorcycle riding. The statistics are that motorcyclists suffer an injury once every 7000 hours of riding whereas a horseback rider can have a serious accident once every 350 hours. Most injuries are traumatic and are often the result of the rider falling off the horse.  These injuries can be quite severe and even leading to death.
Horseback riding injuries mostly occur when the rider falls off the horse. These are considered traumatic injuries and usually occur in the upper extremities, such as the wrist, elbow, and shoulder. There are also some lower extremity injuries involving knee, ankle and foot such as when the foot becomes stuck in the stirrup causing a Lisfranc injury. Soft tissue injuries, fractures or broken bones, dislocations and concussions.  Head, neck and spinal injuries can be quite severe and may cause long-term side effects such as paralysis or seizures.

Muscle and ligament injuries can occur as well. These can be chronic condition from overuse or acute conditions such as strains and sprains
