Rugby is a full contact, high speed, high intensity sport that can injury most parts of the athletes body. It has been historically dominated by males but since it has gained more popularity female athletes have started taking part in the sport. Rugby injury rates are reported to be 3 times higher than soccer. Most injuries are experienced by 10-18 year olds followed by 25-34 year olds

Since on average each player performs between 20-40 tackles per match, Rugby injuries are quite common. It is estimated that as many as 1 in 4 players will be injured during the season.  When there is a mismatch in experience between two opposing front rows almost 25 % of neck injuries can happen. .

A lower ranked or less skilled team within the division, a forward position, being tackled, and beginning of the season are identified as risk factors for rugby injuries.

                                           

Rugby injuries most often occur during matches which makes up about 57% of injuries than in training. They also typically happen during the second half of the game as well. Half of all injuries occur while a player is being tackled or tackling.

Common type of injuries are muscular strains or contusions which make up about 40% of injuries, while 30 %  of injuries are strains, the following percentage are lacerations and overuse injuries. Sprained ankles are the most common sprain injury making up almost 1 in 7 rugby injuries. The head is also vulnerable where 5-25% of rugby injuries are to the head. These include concussions which make up 44% of head injuries. In the youth aged Rugby players aged 10-18 25% of injuries are fractures with 24% of these involve the collarbone
