Lower back pain, also called lumbago, is a very common condition that affects more than 3 million people in the U.S. every year. It usually affects the lower portion of the spine and can be very painful.

LOWER BACK

A large population will experience lower back pain, eighty percent (80%) at some point in their lives. It is a common factor for people to miss work and see a doctor or sport therapist.  Lower back pain can be avoided with some education, back strategies and back exercises.

If you choose to ignore your back care you may become vulnerable to sciatica pain, lower back pain, or other nerve pain from a pinched nerve. Not caring for your lower back pain can result in more serious or permanent conditions.

  • Acute lower back pain can be a result of a herniated disc, back ligament strain, and back muscle pain.
  • Fibromyalgia, ankylosing spondylitis, and rheumatoid arthritis can also cause lower back pain.
  • We know at Olympic Sport Therapy, back pain is as individual as you are and should be cared for with the professional experience of a sport therapist.

Lower back pain has many causes. Lower back pain is usually classified as non-specific low back pain. The causes of most of these injuries of back pain are ligament sprains, joint dysfunction and muscle strain. This happens when pain occurs suddenly after physical activity of the spine

At Olympic Sport Therapy we can treat low back pain and take measures to lessen or prevent most back pain from reoccurring.

The easiest way to recover quickly from lower back pain and prevent reoccurring is early diagnosis and treatment.

Sudden (traumatic) or sustained overstress injuries are the main causes of lower back pain.  Traumatic injury is most relatable to people when bending the wrong way to lift a heavy object. This tears or damages the structures. Sustained overstressed injuries are the most common and easier to prevent.

Your sport therapist will come up with a treatment plan and teach you how to care for your lower back.

Back Muscle Strains

The most common forms of back injuries are from back muscles. Excessive heavy lifting, poor lifting postures and muscle fatigue are the most common problems. Poor joint stabilization and injury are a result of inefficient back muscles.

Strong fibrous bands limit the amount of movement at each level of the spine. Ligaments that are stretched too quickly or too far will tear them with bleeding into the surrounding tissues causing pain and swelling. Motor vehicle accidents awkward lifting   and sport injuries are the most common causes. Olympic sport therapists will help in your healing process and reduce pain to get you back into top condition.

A common spine injury is a bulging disc. Spinal discs are shock absorbing rings that separate the bony vertebrae. the wall of the discs have  a jelly like substance that can bulge and put pressure on the surrounding nerves. This can cause a pinched nerve that can cause back pain, cramping, spasms, pain in your legs, and the feeling of pins and needles

If you have low bone density (osteoporosis) and force in involved and highly traumatic you can fracture your spine.

Poor posture creates muscle fatigue, overstretched ligaments, stretching discs, and places spinal joints and nerves under pressure and pain. This can happen when standing, lifting, and sitting.

Your sport therapist will   assess your back pain and develop treatment plan for you. Early treatment of back pain will respond quickly allowing you to be pain free with fewer reoccurrences.

A specific treatment plan with corrective lower back exercises will be guided by your sport therapist. With proper exercise and your sport therapist following your treatment plan, back pain relief is very achievable. With your cooperation and commitment, your back pain can be relieved with in 4-6 weeks.
