WaterPolo injuries can happen due to ball impacts, injuries from throwing, and injuries from swimming.

WaterPolo uses a combination of throwing and swimming.

This sport presents many different injuries for its players. It combines high intensity activity with low intensity activity to make this sport very demanding.

Some of the injuries players experience:

  • Injuries of the Lower Extremity

Injuries like these can be sprains strains and abrasions which are acute as well as rotator cuff injuries referred to as overuse injuries.

Athletes who play water polo sustain injury to all 3 regions of the spine. Most common injuries are to the neck (cervical) and lower back (lumbar). This usually happens during practice or training.

  • Lower Back Pain
Upper extremity injuries this includes the elbow, shoulder, hand & wrist.  These type of injuries tend to happen as a result of traumatic injury or overuse.

The type of injuries that Water Polo players sustain are:

  • Shoulder dislocation
  • Lesions
  • Swimmer’s Shoulder
  • Rotator Cuff Injury
  • Thrower’s Elbow
  • Hand, finger and thumb lacerations and dislocations.
Utilizing the joints and muscles of the lower body from the hip down, may create lower extremity injuries. Generally, these type of lower body injuries are a result of repetitive motion used to maintain the position of the body to generate power for a “shot” or “pass”. Typical injuries in Water Polo players include:

  • Groin Pain
  • Femoroacetabular Impingement(FAI)
  • Adductor Muscle Strain
  • Groin Strain(Adductor Muscle Tear)
  • Adductor Tendinopathy
  • Osteitis Pubis
  • Knee Injuries
