HOCKEY

Hockey can be classified into two sports. Ice hockey and field hockey.

Ice Hockey

Let’s first talk about ice hockey. Ice hockey is a fast paced game that has high skating speeds and a hard hitting high impact sport. Acute/traumatic injuries as well as chronic injuries can occur with the sport. Traumatic injuries account for 80% of these injuries. Traumatic lacerations can occur with impact with skate blades, long sticks and pucks traveling more than 100 mph. In ice hockey shoulder injuries are a common problem due to the direct contact of other players, the boards or the ice. These impact injuries can include shoulder separation or a broken collarbone. Treatment can include rest a sling or in some serious cases surgery.  Studies show that most injuries occur during games rather than practices. Overuse injuries of the muscle and ligaments injuries can occur in the wrist, ankles and back due to the swinging of the hockey stick, turning quickly on ice skates, as well as stopping and starting quickly.

Field hockey is also a highly popular game played in 132 countries. It is the second most played team sport after soccer. It is estimated that around 15% of hockey players are injured during a single season. Due to these injuries players spend 11% of the total hockey season training and playing at less than full capacity. Field Hockey injuries are similar to Ice hockey where acute/traumatic injuries are most common from being hit by the stick or ball as well as colliding with other players.  Chronic injuries to the ankles and back are quite common due to overuse
