CALF

Your calf muscle is made up of wo muscles, gastrocnemius and soleus, that attach to your Achilles tendon. Sports that include jumping, running, landing and hopping activities can cause calf pain.

Calf injuries can occur to both muscle and tendon structures. They are commonly caused by excessive forces during explosive contraction, eccentric control loading or when your calf muscles fatigue.

Excessive stress through your shin bone (the tibia) can result in shin pain and injuries. The calf muscles protect your shin bone. Injuries to the calf can happen to both tendons and muscle during forceful contraction, calf muscle training, and when the calf muscle fatigues.

A torn calf muscle, Achilles tendonitis and leg cramps are the most common form of calf pain.

Here is a list of causes of calf pain:

  • Achilles Tendon Rupture
  • Achilles Tendonitis / Tendinitis
  • Calf Muscle Tear
  • DOMS – Delayed Onset Muscle Soreness
  • High Ankle Sprain
  • Lupus
  • Muscle Strain (Muscle Pain)
  • Overuse Injuries
  • Peroneal Tendonitis
  • Pinched Nerve
  • Retrocalcaneal Bursitis
  • Sciatica
  • Severs Disease
  • Shin Splints
  • Sprained Ankle
  • Stress Fracture
Sometimes calf pain can be a result t of sciatica or Deep Venous Thrombosis (DVT’s).

Sciatica is caused by a nerve in your lower back that is pinched. This condition can easily be treated successfully by your sport therapist.  Occasionally if the condition has been left untreated for too long, the patient will need surgery.

DVT’s are to taken very seriously and should be examined by a doctor to rule out the presence of DVT’s.

Early treatment of calf pain will quickly respond to your sport therapist. Your professional will know the right treatment plan to heal you quickly and get you back to optimal performance.
